DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH LITERATURE - AIDED

ABOUT US

The Department of English, Ethiraj College for Women, established in the year 1948, occupies a prestigious position not only in the state of Tamil Nadu, but also across the nation. In its nascent stage, only General English was offered to the UG students. From these humble beginnings, it is today a full-fledged research department, attracting students from far and wide. The UG course, begun in 1962, has been highly successful, always enjoying 100% results and bagging several university ranks under the non-autonomous stream. The potential of the department was rapidly recognized and it was upgraded, first as a PG department and later as a research department offering M.Phil and Ph.D.

With autonomy being conferred on the college, the sky was the limit for the Department of English. It was one of the earliest colleges to offer absolutely new and innovative courses like Popular Culture and Literature, Film and Literature, Children’s Literature, World Literature, Journalism, Copy Editing, Translation Studies,Women’s Writing, History Through Fiction, Academic Writing & Research Methodology and Creative Writing, both at the UG as well as the PG level. The erudite faculty members have attracted several budding research scholars whose work is of a high standard.

Apart from the traditional courses like B.A.,M.A.,M.Phil and Ph.D the department also offers Certificate courses in BEC (Business English) and FCE (First Certificate in English).

The department is the hub of literary and academic activities with several publications by the faculty members. The annual publication of the department Research Journal, Scholastic International Research Journal of Language & Literature, is the first refereed journal of Ethiraj College. Several National and International Conferences and workshops are also a part of the department culture.
