DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE

ABOUT US

The introduction of Commerce (Self-Supporting) was started in June 1981 with an initial strength of 70 students. With the pressing demand for the course one more batch with an additional strength of 70 students came into existence in 1984-85. The programme assures professional education of immense value by equipping the students with adequate knowledge in various facets of commerce so as to enable them to emerge as business leaders.

To give the meritorious students the opportunity of pursuing a challenging course and to meet the demands of the corporate world, the department is now offering a new course, B.Com (Hons.) with a sauction strength of 40 students from the academic year 2012-2013 as a three year UG programme designed to inculcate the business acumen in students. The programme aims at imparting in depth knowledge and skills in all the important subjects in the field of commerce such as accounting, finance, taxation, law and management.

Industry institute integrated learning is the USP of the programme. To enable this, the college has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with reputed organizations such as The Raintree Hotels, Indian Overseas Bank, Manohar Chowdhary and Associates- Chartered Accountants and Padmanaban Ramani and Ramanujam- Chartered Accountants so that students obtain better practical knowledge and hands on experience. The Department intends to sign MoU with few more reputed organizations. Every student has to undergo 14 weeks of internship and submit a report which shall be evaluated internally and by experts from premier institutes or by industry experts.

Guest faculties from MoU Companies and other subject experts are invited to deliver lectures on challenging topic to enable students to gain practical insights into the subjects.

The curriculum provides ample scope for creative thinking and participative learning through discussions, seminars, case studies, class assignments and field visits. The department has also entered into a MoU with the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance.

The department also conducts two day annual association programme COMET (COMmerce EThiraj) where competitions on events like adzap, pot pouri, business plan and other co-curricular activities are organized both at the inter collegiate and inter class level. To tap the journalistic skills in the students, a journal on relevant themes is brought out every year.

Students are also active participants in extra curricular, co-curricular activities and sports. They have won cups and trophies in the inter departmental competitions consecutively for certain number of years.

Introduction of these courses has reasonably satisfied the expectations of the corporate world as a large number of young, enterprising graduates are able to find suitable placements in reputed organizations.
