DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
The College which was founded in 1948 in post independent era, with a mission to educate women as equal citizens, rightfully clinched on a science course in Chemistry at Intermediate level. The department is offering Chemistry as both Allied and Major subjects at UG level since 1957 and grew into a post graduate department in 1989. The department was upgraded to a Research department in 2005 offering M.Phil programme and Ph.D programme in 2012. At present the department has 12 vibrant faculty members. The curriculum includes subjects of current interest viz: Nanochemistry ,Polymer Chemistry , Spectroscopy , Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry and Biochemistry and project is mandatory in PG Curriculum. The department has excellent infrastructure with well equipped laboratories and a common Instrumentation centre to cater the needs of research scholars of the institution and other city Colleges.
The department of Chemistry was selected by the UGC in 2011 to celebrate the International year of Chemistry (IYC) with a grant of Rs 1 lakh. A State level Symposium in Chemistry was conducted wherein students from all over the state participated. An exhibition for College and School students was conducted in connection with IYC celebrations to evince interest in basic science. The department organized an interdisciplinary workshop on Radiochemistry in collaboration with IGCAR in 2012 and a State level workshop on “Structure determination of compounds by Spectroscopic techniques – A problem solving approach ” in 2013 where in research scholars from all over the state participated and were benefitted. To commemorate the Silver jubilee celebration of the Post Graduate course in Chemistry the department organized a two day UGC sponsored National Symposium on “Emerging Trends in Nano Science Research” on 11th and 12th December 2014. The department of Chemistry since its inception has turned out young intelligent Researchers, Chemists and Teachers. The department has several publications in National and International journals. The department also offers a certificate course in Medical Transcription.
