The Department of Mathematics, from its very inception in 1948, has aimed to be a centre of excellence in mathematics and has vigorously engaged in both research and teaching. It was started as an ancillary department. In 1980 it became a major department and in 1989 an evening batch was started to meet the increasing demand for the subject. An additional section was introduced in the year 1991 in the evening college. In 1994, the department acquired post graduate status by introducing M. Sc Mathematics. The department was upgraded as a research department in 2005 with the introduction of M. Phil programme in the aided stream. The department has at present 18 energetic and dedicated faculty members in both aided and self supporting stream and has a good number of Mathematicians visiting it every year. The department has its own state-of-the-art, Computer laboratory and also houses a good collection of subject books.

The department also supports other departments by offering allied courses in Mathematics at the under graduate level to B. Com, B. Sc. Computer Science, B. CA and at the PG level to M. Com. We also offer Skill Based courses to all the other under graduate departments.

The department association “NUMERA” has also been actively engaged in organizing various activities. Every year the department releases a journal comprising articles, puzzles and innovative mathematical ideas. A Mathematical exhibition is conducted every year to kindle the imagination and mathematical skills among the students.

In the current economic scenario, employment opportunities for Mathematics are excellent – both in academics and in industry. The department is proud of its alumni, most of who are placed in much reputed international firms like Wipro, Infosys, TCS, CTS etc. Many of our students are pursuing higher studies in India and abroad.

The department started a very innovative program- B. Sc Mathematics with Computer Applications in the year 2012. Computer applications is one of the thrust areas in science and technology. The main program is to impart employability skills and creativity to the students and to live up to the standards of the IT industry. A unique feature of this program is that the students who opt for this course are eligible to ppursue M. Sc Mathematics, M. Sc Statistics and MCA.

Our department is constantly striving for greater excellence and is committed to bringing out great mathematicians who will make a note worthy contribution to society.
