With due assistance from Equitas, a Micro Finance company, eight women from Thideer nagar, a slum in Chennai were identified as the target community. A shed, highly conducive for mushroom cultivation was constructed in Campus II, Annexe block of the college under the guidance of Famec Tech Pvt Ltd.. As a next step the women were scientifically trained by Mr. Ragupathy, an expert cum researcher in mushrooms to cultivate, harvest and pack the mushrooms hygienically. The project was subsequently chosen to receive grant from ‘Blue Dart’ and retail giant ‘Walmart’ under its prestigious ‘Women Empowerment Grant’.
On January 8th, the project was inaugurated by Mr. V.M.Muralidharan, Chairman, Ethiraj College for Women. Currently the community make on an average 25 bags per day to give a yield of 5/6 Kilograms per day. The proceeds from the sale of mushrooms are given back to the community to enhance their standard of living. The objective of the project, that of empowering a downtrodden community has been made possible with the support of specialised committees that effectively monitor the Shed Work, Harvesting, Marketing, Finance and Public Relations.
