Red Ribbon Club
The Red Ribbon Club, a unit of NSS was launched in the Aided Stream. Two programmes on AIDS awareness were organized in the college. Our Volunteers participated in "Kalaingar Life Saving Scheme" launched by the Government of Tamilnadu. A bilingual news paper launched by the South India AIDS Action Programme (SIAAP) and the UNICEF were distributed to all the students of the college. On a regular basis RRC volunteers participated in various activities like visisting AIDS Awareness Exhibition held at Kilpauk Medical College, AIDS Cell Government General Hospital and World Heart Day Program
Ethiraj College for Women (Autonomous) has the unique distinction of being the first college in the city to start a second unit of RRC in the evening college. It was started in the year 2006 with the objective of not only creating awareness on HIV/AIDS but also to inculcate social sensitivity and develop social responsibility in the students.
The club was inaugurated by Dr. B. Regina Papa, State RRC Co- ordinator, Tamilnadu State AIDS Control Society(TANSACS)in August 2006. World AIDS Day was observed by distribution of HIV/AIDS awareness pamphlets to the public by RRC members at the Spencer’s junction and at the Co-optex junction in Egmore. The students attended the Right Youth Life Convention conducted by TANSACS in March 2007.
A rally creating awareness on HIV/AIDS and on the importance of blood donation conducted along the route Ethiraj salai- south koovam road- harris road- marshals road in the month of August 2007. RRC Ethiraj (eve) created history by releasing a blood donors directory which was the first of its kind by a women’s college unit in the state. The Blood donors’ directory was released by Ms. Supriya Sahu, IAS, Project Director, TANSACS, it consists of list of donors in the evening college. World AIDS Day was jointly observed with Standard Chartered Bank. HIV+ children from CHES Ashram and Shelter Home were entertained by RRC members in the college auditorium,. A magic show and a puppet show were also organized. A inter-collegiate painting competition was held on the topic "one world one hope- right to stop AIDS" was also conducted.
An interactive session on personal hygiene and reproductive health was conducted by Dr. Amudha Hari ,Gynaecologist , Founder, Mithras foundation. An HIV/AIDS awareness campaign was organized from 24th November to 1st December 2008. The students of RRC staged street plays in the Government schools in and around Egmore and Chetpet. The second edition of the Blood Donors Directory was released Dr. Vijayakumar IAS, Project Director, and TANSACS on Aug. 29th 2009. It consists of blood donors of both Aided and Self supporting stream. On Sep. 26th 2009, Dr.Lakshmi Vijayakumar, Founder, Sneha Foundation addressed the students on suicide prevention.A follow up programme for students diagnosed anaemic in the blood donation camp was conducted by Dr. Susheela of Lions Blood Bank.
